The Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center (CTRC), a non-profit
organization located in Longmont Colorado, has been changing lives for people
with disabilities and special needs for over 30 years. Founded in 1980, CTRC is
the oldest and largest therapeutic riding center in Colorado, is among the
largest in the nation and is a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center - the
highest level of accreditation possible. We provide services through core program areas such as
Therapeutic Riding,
Hippotherapy,
All Abilities IntegratedSummer Camps and
Mini Troopers.
Any of our offered equine assisted therapeutic services
is far more than a mere pony ride. Rather, they are a complex and
exciting means of therapy that produces tangible physical,
psychological, cognitive, social, and educational
benefits.
2010 marked CTRC's 30th Anniversary. We started in a park, with three riders, a handful of volunteers and a few borrowed horses. Now, 31 years later, thanks to the unyielding commitment, vision and unwavering support of many wonderful individuals, foundations and community groups, CTRC has a premier facility where, with the awe inspiring help of a 1,000 member volunteer workforce, over 650 riders a year from over 9 counties are served.
Not only do we change the lives of those we serve but also those who help us serve. Riders like Ruffin, who, diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), is unable to speak or use sign language but through speech language focused hippotherapy sessions is now able to speak via his "voice box" device. Volunteers, like Emily, who though soft spoken, clearly will tell you “When I first started volunteering I had no idea how big an impact CTRC would have on my life. I even decided to become a physical therapist because of my experiences at CTRC. I realized how much I love working with the riders, and how rewarding it is to watch their progress. The relationships that I have built with my riders and the other volunteers are very important to me. I feel like I have gotten even more out of my experiences at CTRC than I have given.”
